How the Waif Bunny Came to Be The story of The Waif Bunny is based on my real-life journey with my now deceased life partner, Julio Suárez. When Julio was very sick with AIDS in a San Francisco hospital in the early 90’s, many thought he would not survive. Knowing only a miracle would save him, I went home and got The Waif Bunny, our beloved stuffed toy, who was very old and did not like to leave the house. I wrapped him up very carefully in a handkerchief and brought him back to the hospital where I put him in bed with Julio. The Waif Bunny spent the whole day sitting on Julio’s chest.
Much to the doctors’ surprise, Julio recovered a short time later.
